Plan B for Android Review | PlugMobi.com

Whenever you lose your phone, if you have ever that is, you have probably started brainstorming apps that can help you located it; Plan B is one of them. This free, Android-based app is one of the few ways you can follow to help you locate your phone, if you’ve misplaced it. The only condition that needs to be fulfilled is that your phone needs to be connected to either the Internet, be it WiFi, your cellular data or GPRS. Also, you don’t need to have this app pre-installed, which comes as a relief to many.

The only problem we had with this app was it didn’t support any Android device after Android version 3.0 and onwards (Honeycomb) which also includes Ice Cream Sandwich and, of course, the all-new Jelly Bean. Nonetheless, Plan B is a great app if you have lost your phone and are trying to locate it somehow. We recommend it if you’re running an Android 2.0 device, otherwise, you’re out of luck.

How Does It Work

Plan B for Android Review Plan B for Android ReviewFor this example, we are going to consider Google Play. Plan B aims at taking advantage of a loophole that is found in pre-Honeycomb devices which lets Google start an app up from a remote location, like we said earlier, in this case, Google Play.

For the victim, there are only two steps you need to follow. Log into Google Play (it doesn’t matter what browser you are using) and look for this app on the internet. Once you find it, download it and install it, also specify that you lost your device during the process. The Google Play app will automatically install on your device and it also start running as soon as your installation is complete.

Now, you will receive and email from Google Play, so you will want to check your email. You will receive an email which will show you an estimation of your device’s location using geo-location features on Google Maps. For the next 10 to 15 minutes, you will keep receiving updates regarding the location of your phon. If you have the GPS turned on, you will receive exact coordinates otherwise you will have to live with the approximations.

Did It Work

Oh it worked alright. I tried this app with my Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone that was running Android version 2.3.5 Gingerbread. Setting up the entire app was easy. I followed the steps written by me in the section above and everything worked out flawlessly. Everything came up the way I described above.

Once you have your phone, you should really consider it a blessing. Install a mobile security app on Android as there are many great ones out there. Try to have features like remote wiping, data backup or remote locking installed and ready to be deployed in case you are hit with such a problem. It’s not a nice situation to be in.
